On the northern shore of Dominica, Cabarete is a world class kitesurf and windsurf mecca.
Encuentro is not a spot for beginners, if you want to learn go to Kite Beach where there is a separate kitesurfing area approx 20 minutes from the main Bay, as well as other learner spots.
Cabarete caters for a whole range of abilities from beginners in the morning to freeride/slalom and wave sailors in the afternoon. There are four main riding spots in and around: Bozo Beach, Kite Beach, Encuentro and La Boca, at the mouth of the river, with flat flat water.
The main Kite Beach is very crowded in high season but in a short drive you can get away from the crowd.

Wind:
The wind in Cabarete is the result from a combination of trade windsi and thermic wind.
The trade windsi come from the East, and the coast is oriented in such a way that the thermic also comes from East.
The trade windsi are usually 5 to 15 knots, and the thermic winds add another 5 to 10 knots.
The average speed is usually in the 20 knots range.
hottest months are from June to October (daily temperatures around 29°C - 84°F). Slightly cooler from December to March (27°C - 80°F). At night temperatures drop by about 5°C, so you rarely need more than a sheet for covering to sleep comfortably.
Water temperature is around 27°C.
Weather:
Being in a tropical climate zone means constant humidity. But when you are along the shoreline, the cool soothing breeze blowing in off the sea tends to make it feel less hot and more comfortable. Brief tropical showers - which can sometimes be quite heavy- are usual. These generally last not much more than half an hour and tend to clear up shortly afterwards. Sometimes it does rain for longer periods. When is flat:
Day activities:
Other activities include diving (one of the best spots is just a 15 minute drive away), mountain biking, hiking, canyoning, kayaking, whale watching and much more...
Night scene:
Nights in Cabarete and Sousa are good fun: nightlife scene has developed around windsurfing so all the bars are laid back. Local bands play at different venues most nights and somewhere along the beach Happy Hour seems to last from 5pm to midnight. Into the early hours, Las Brisas stays open late playing Latin American music. On Saturdays there's a usual volleyball competition.
