Kite in South Florida

Hi! I am from Argentina. I started kiting last February and am planning to go kiting to South Florida (Miami, Key West, Fort Lauderdale, etc.) October 2007. I will come along with my wife and kid (2 years old) and I am not sure yet what spot should I target. Does any have any experience kiting in South Florida in October (and with a kid!?!?!?). Any spot to recommend?

Florida in october

hello Sebastian, October in Florida can be a transition month for wind. You may find wind in some places, but typically the windy season starts in November from my experience. I should add that I have not spent time in Florida between June and October, so other people may have different viewpoints...hopefully some locals will respond. As a beginner you would benefit most from flatwater riding spots. Biscayne Bay (the Kite House at Virginia Key runs a water taxi, but it's a bit expensive). Matheson Hammock is supposed to be a good spot, or the Keys (again you will need a boat or pay someone for service). The Keys can be awesome for flat water, but there are very few places to launch...I can only think of 3-4 beach launch sites between Key Largo and Key West! and they can be sketchy. You could do some more research at the FKA kiteboarding forum http://www.fksa.org/index.php The St. Petersburg/Tampa Bay area has many flat water spots - good for beginners, but that is about 4 hours from Miami. Again, wind might not be very reliable and you will have to tune in to the local wind patterns, sea breezes, etc. In either case be optimistic, bring your kites and try to get in touch with the locals. Please be careful not to launch at restricted spots...there are a lot of beaches where kiting is strictly forbidden, and others where the rules are strictly enforced. good luck and have a great trip Ride Safe! Kite in South Florida

Thank you Roberto for taking your time to reply. Very useful info. fksa's site is very helpful for my purposes (did not know of it), though your email was a little bit dissapointing, I must confess... Anyways, it is always good to be realistic...

Best,

Sebas

Don't go to FL without your gear

Sebas,

Do not be discouraged or misinterpret my message...I never go anywhere without my gear, and you mght just be treated to the best October winds ever. Again, please study local restrictions and weather. FL can have some very unstable weather and be careful not to get caught by surprise by sudden storms and fast moving fronts that can bring instantaneous gusts and wind shifts that can be overpowering. Again, the best would be to speak wth an experienced local and respect their advice.
