Heading to Hatteras...OBX or bust!
The "wind festival" is almost over here in FL, so it's time to head North to the OBX - my annual Spring Trip for some riding and coaching. As many know the OBX is an awesome place for riders of all levels and for learning.
I'll be there for the next 3 weeks and will update as I go.
5/5/07: OBX, 200 miles to go...35-40 kts and 15-20 waves in the forecast for Sunday and Monday....whooahhh! Hello 5m Waroo!
5/6/07: It's currently blowing NNE 40+ with higher gusts, and the waves are 10-15 ft., the wave tops being blown off in giant sheets of water. The whole house is shaking as I look out over the tops of the dunes and across the churning Atlantic. It's difficult to walk in this wind, the sand stings your face, filling your ears, mouth, eyes, hair...Is it wise to kite today? Perhaps not.
5/7/07: I am in Waves, NC and we are sitting in the middle of the big Weather Channel story. We have 15-20 foot waves pounding the dunes just meters from the house...40 foot waves reported just off-shore. The wind has been shaking the house for over 24 hours non-stop. 35-50 mph wind speeds. The roads are washed out to the North and South so we are virtual prisoners on this thin sandy strip of land. Surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing have been out of the question...perhaps tomorrow. I actually think I could kite the 100m wide zone from the beach out to where it gets really wild...5m or 7m kite would be my choice. Dropping the kite or losing your board in this maelstrom of water would be a big problem though... Hopefully tomorrow we can enter the water with some safety...can't wait to ride again!!! Tomorrow we kite for sure, mes amis
5/8/07...Finally got to get back into the water today...fully lit with a 9m Waroo and brand new Spleene 154 (what a board!!!) Ocean side is still pretty crazy, so we headed way out into the sound with a new Predator inflatable cat with a 50 hp motor to find some clean NE wind...cool boat by the way!!!
