Feb18, 2007 - Blowing 25-30 kts on the Key West Flats

Kitesurfing and teaching in Florida this winter has been superb. At first an unusual warm weather pattern developed a lot of NE-E wind pattern that was perfect for the flat water locations in the St. Petersburg/Tampa Bay area. We had some great riding over New Years weekend in South Beach, as well as in Naples and Sanibel during the January heat wave.

The typical winter cold fronts did not come thru until mid February while I was teaching in Key West, producing some bone chilling weather and some nice high-wind days
. I even wore my drysuit a few days! A few people laughed but later regretted their delusions about it always being warm and tropical in Key West!)

I also had some great riding over in Jupiter and Fort Pierce (it was great to be riding in the waves again after the flats of Key West) before returning to St. Pete recently.

So many cool spots to ride and teach down here!

Hi, I saw your blog and that you've been in Key West kitting. I am going there from Tuesday to Thursday and will bring my kite (12m x-bow II). I will also be with 3 other people who don't kite, so I would not like to bore them totally... :) I would like some recomendations on where to kite there: -Tuesday: I will be getting to entering the islands highway at about noon time, so is there a good spot on the way to Key West (another of the islands)? some place where the others can be at the beach? -Wednesday: I have the whole day, so a boat trip would be nice, but again, don't want to leave the other 3 people anchored under the sun to dry their skin... I thought about going to the flats. I am not sure if there is any place there where people can get of the boat, like a little sand or rock island. -Thursday: probably kite in the beach in Key West, then by 3PM I have to leave to catch the flight... So, any recomendations are really valuable... Thank you! Christian

Christian,

I'm sorry I missed your message here, by now you may have aready left the Keys.

I hope you had a good time and good wind. The Keys are fun to ride the flats, but you need a boat for many wind directions.

There are lots of good places to ride in FL during the winter, with a wide variety of conditions.

Let me know how your trip went and if you have any other questions you can also send an email thru this website if you go to my instructor page. see below
